Wicked the Musical is based on Gregory Maguire's best-selling work Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is meant to be a prequel or a parallel novel to L. Frank Baum's classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked tells the fascinating story of how Glinda came to be known as the"Good Witch of the North" and Elphaba the"Wicked Witch of the West." The stage-script alludes to instances from the famous film version of The Wizard of Oz from 1939 but the plot mainly covers the period before Dorothy's arrival from Kansas. 

Wicked the Musical is a brilliant stretch of the imagination, being the"untold story of the wizard of Oz;" the friendship between the two witches Glinda and Elphaba who find they click as well as clash with each other. Glinda is pretty, vain and ambitious; Elphaba has been perpetually challenged because of her green skin despite the fact that she's a truly talented witch. They discover their dislike for one another in college; drama ensues. Glinda and Elphaba must use their talents to win what they desire: power, celebrity and love. The Wizard's corrupt government (and the lopsided social structure it presents) influences all the characters. Glinda and Elphaba struggle to achieve their destiny along with other interesting characters (like the goat-professor Dr. Dillamond, the pretty but crippled and self-absorbed Nessa) with similar quirks and issues.

The book for Wicked the musical was written by Winnie Holzman, with songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The musical's popularity spread like wild-fire after its debut, making it a candidate for the highest accolades. Wicked the musical won the Grammy for Best Cast Album, was nominated for ten Tony Awards in 2004, and ended up winning for Best Actress, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design. The musical also carried away six Drama Desk Awards including the one for Outstanding Musical.

The musical score of Wicked the Musical resembles a film score more than a typical stage-musical score in being thematic; Schwartz has woven several motifs together that signify particular moments, moods and characters in the story, and work as musical flashbacks reinforcing and intensifying the plot.
