Of the many musicals whose Broadway premiere is set for this year, Violet is a fan favorite. Its music is by Jeanine Tesori with a book and lyrics by Brian Crawley. It is based upon The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts, an award winning short story. The musical premiered as an Off–Broadway production in 1997 and is now all set for a 2014 premiere on New York City's Broadway. A heart wrenching story filled with emotion and perseverance, it is a must view live by purchasing Violet tickets.
Violet the musical follows the story of a young woman from Spruce Pine in the American state of North Carolina. She is disfigured and goes by bus to Tulsa, Oklahoma for treatment. The musical follows her tough journey and the obstacles she has to overcome. It was one of the most talked about Off–Broadway musicals in 1997 and went on to win the Lucille Lortel Award for ‘The Best Musical’ and a Drama Critics' Circle Award.
It took three years to work on Violet before its Off–Broadway premier. The musical was staged at the National Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to much acclaim. Several years later, it premiered at the Playwrights Horizon on Off–Broadway in 1997 and ran for quite some time. The musical was choreographed by Kathleen Marshall with Susan H. Schulman as the director. Members of the cast included Lauren Ward playing Violet, Michael Park playing Monty and Michael McElroy playing Flick.
The next premier of Violet was staged in 2003 at the Playwrights Horizon. It featured cast members from the Off–Broadway production. After a decade long silence, a production was staged at the New York City Center by the Encores! Off–Center Series. This time around, Violet's role was played by Sutton Foster with the role of Flick played by Joshua Henry. Other characters were played by Christopher Sieber, Keala Settle, Van Hughes, Rema Webb and Anastacia McCleskey.
In 2014, this critically acclaimed musical is set to be staged by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway. The Broadway production's cast will feature Sutton Foster playing Violet's role again. The director of this production is Leigh Silverman with Jeffrey Page as the choreographer, Michael Rafter as the musical director, David Zinn as the set designer and Clint Ramos as the costume designer. The original two–act musical has also been rewritten as a one–act musical, similar to the 2013 Encores! production.
Other productions of the musical are also set for 2014. Washington DC, America's political capital, will play host to a run of the musical at the prestigious Ford's Theatre. This production has Jeff Calhoun as the choreographer and director. Its cast features Erin Driscoll playing Violet, Kevin McAllister playing Flick and James Gardiner playing Monty.
The original cast recording of the musical came out in 1998 and received much critical acclaim. It was reviewed as an 'accomplished piece of work'. The New York Times, for one, has reviewed it positively. It has also won a good many awards.
The musical has received seven Drama Desk Award nominations for ‘Outstanding New Musical’, ‘Outstanding Lead Actress’ and ‘Outstanding Director’ so far. It has also received an ‘Outstanding Off–Broadway Musical’ nomination from the Outer Critics Circle Award and won a Drama Critics Circle Award, a Lucille Lortel Award and an Obie Award. Eagerly awaited by fans of this art form, Violet tickets are on sale for the interested people.
