The Waverly Gallery: A Masterpiece by Kenneth Lonergan
The Waverly Gallery is a theatrical masterpiece which is created by the famous American film director, screenwriter and playwright, Kenneth Lonergan. He is best known for writing and directing popular Hollywood flicks like, ‘Manchester by the Sea,’ ‘You Can Count On Me’ and ‘Margaret.’ The first film from the list won him an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for, ‘Best Original Screenplay.’ He is also the mastermind behind many famous plays including, ‘This Is Our Youth,’ ‘Lobby Hero,’ ‘The Starry Messenger’ and ‘Hold On to Me Darling.’
Kenneth Lonergan started working on The Waverly Gallery during the 1990s. It is considered a memory play in which the protagonist narrates the story drawn from the character’s memory. The term, ‘memory play’ was first coined by Thomas Lanier “Tennessee” Williams III who used it while describing his play, ‘The Glass Menagerie.’
The Waverly Gallery premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival where it ran from August 11 - 22, 1999. This production of the play featured the two-time Emmy winning actress, Anna Eileen Herbert. However, due to her health issues, she was replaced by the Academy Award winner for, ‘Best Actress,’ Joanne Woodward for the final four performances.
The Waverly Gallery received a great response for its premiere. As a result of that, Kenneth Lonergan decided to move the play to Off-Broadway. It opened Off-Broadway on March 22, 2000 at the Promenade Theater. The show was directed by the eight-time Tony nominated stage and television director, Scott Ellis who is known for working in famous musicals including, ‘She Loves Me,’ ‘On the Twentieth Century’ and ‘The Boys from Syracuse.’ This show featured Josh Hamilton as Daniel and Eileen Heckart as Gladys Green. The show concluded on May 21, 2000.
The Off-Broadway production of The Waverly Gallery became a huge hit mainly due to its mesmerizing performances. Heckart did a great job in the show and was honored with a Drama Desk Award for, ‘Outstanding Actress.’ She also won the Lucille Lortel Award and the Drama League Award.
