The storyline of the play is based on the aging characters of Willie Clark and Al Lewis. They used to be once a vaudevillian team who were best known as "Lewis and Clark". The two characters of the play over a span of forty years have not just begun to hate one another but they have also not spoken to each other off the stage all along their final year in the act seen on the stage. Clark is seen as a rather stubborn person who refuses to accept retirement and holds great resentment for Lewis who seems to be much wiser to him. Lewis had effectively managed to break up the act when he chose to let go off show business. The play moves to the present situation where the year is 1972 and CBS Network has given both of them to come together and perform in a special program of comedy. The program demands the Clark and Lewis to display their vaudeville time when it was at its peak. Ben, who is the nephew of Clark, persuades him to bring life to one of the old routines that he used to perform for just one last time. Most of the humor that you will get to see on the stage has been taken from the great efforts to get the two characters to get inside one room to rehearse for the show. Here the audience gets to see the major conflicting opinions that the two characters share as they are on the path to reunite. The fact that their shenanigans are at their best when the actual broadcast begins leaves the audience is absolute hilarious stitches.

The writer of The Sunshine Boys, Neil Simon took his inspiration from two revered burlesque teams. The play takes its inspiration from Smith and Dale, who are totally contrasting to their respective counterparts as seen on the stage were literally inseparable friends throughout their life. On the other hand, the backstage hostility that is seen occurring between Clark and Lewis takes its brainwave from the renowned team called Gallagher and Shean who were once extremely successful artists in the show business yet they both possessed a great deal of argumentative personalities. Another source of the play is from the team of Weber and Fields.

The first time that the play was featured to the public was when it premiered on Broadway on the 18th of December in 1972, at the famous Broadhurst Theatre. Later on the play was shifted to the Shubert Theatre and then went on to being staged at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The show closed on the 21st of April in 1974. A total of 538 mega hit and completely sold out performances of the show took place along with two major previews. The original production has been directed by Alan Arkin while Emanuel Azenberg was the producer of the show. Sam Levene played the role of Lewis, while Clark was played by Jack Albertson and the character of Ben was played by Lewis J. Stadlen. The play received three Tony Award nominations and the Drama Desk Award in the category of Outstanding Performance was won by Jack Alberston. In 1975, a movie was made of the play with Walter Mathua as Clark and Lewis was played by George Burns. George Burns ended up winning an Oscar Award for the Best Supporting Actor. On the 28th of December in 1997 the prestigious Hallmark Entertainment production of the play was adapted by Neil Simon. This television show featured Woody Allen, Peter Falk, Sarah Jessica Parker, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael McKean, Edie Falco and Live Schreiber. There were also a total f three German TV programs of the production known as Sonny Boys.
