Maria soon wins the Captain's heart and they fall in love. However, the two lovers part when the World War II breaks out, and the Captain is sent into battle for Hitler's Third Reich. He then manages to arrange for his family to escape to the safety of Switzerland, away from perils of the war. The songs, such as final song So Long, Farewell is a heartening number, full of hope. It is a perfect anecdote to the circumstances in which the von Trapp family find themselves.

Casting Theodore Bikel as Captain Georg von Trapp and Mary Martin as Maria, the original Broadway production opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in the November of 1959. It was directed by Vincent J. Donehue and choreographed by Joe Layton. The production won Tony for Best Musical and for Best Actress in a Musical - Mary Martin. Several other awards were alsoclaimed by the musical for different categories.
