Based on a movie with the same name, The Producers is a musical whose lyrics are written by Mel Brooks, music by Glen Kelly and Brooks, while the book is written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan. The show began in 2001 for the first time on Broadway and after over 2,502 performances and 12 Tony Awards, it is considered as one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history.

After the success of the movie by Mel Brooks, his friend David Geffen convinced him to perform it as a stage musical. Brooks asked Jerry Herman to write the musical who instead persuaded him to do it himself owing to the fact that he believed Brooks was capable enough. Brooks was joined by Mike Ockrent and his wife Susan Stroman for this project, but in 1999 Ockrent died after which Stroman took over as both director as well as choreographer.

The first act opens showing New York in 1959, where Max Bialystock, a producer opens a musical named Funny Boy that turns out to be a flop. The next day his accountant Leo tells him that he actually raised $100,000 for the musical while it actually cost him $98,000. Max asks him to cover up the extra money in books that Leo agrees and tells him that he can actually make more money with a flop production as compared to a hit. This gives Max a corrupt idea that he shares with Leo, to find the worst play ever written, get it directed by the worst director using the worst performers , raise 2 million dollars for it from investors in town, and as it closes down on Broadway, they would run away to Rio with one million dollar each. Leo initially disagrees but after getting scolded by his boss he returns to Max and they start working on this plan.

They find the worst play ever written by writer Franz Liebkind with the name Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgarden. Next, they find Roger De Bris, the worst director from New York who is also a homosexual and ask him to direct the play. They also hire a Swedish girl for their play named Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson, only for her beauty after which Max goes out to raise his 200 million dollars.

In the second act, Leo and Ulla are falling in love after being left alone at Max’s office, where Max returns to find them like that. He has trouble finding the worst actor for Hitler’s role and finally signs Franz himself for it. As the show opens, Franz breaks his leg and his role is taken up by Roger who performs it so pathetically that people mistake it for a humorous one and the musical, instead of being a flop as expected by Max and Leo, becomes a hit. Franz comes to their office where the two are fighting, and shows his anger over funny portrayal of his beloved Fuhrer. As they all fight, Police arrests them while Ulla and Leo hide and escape. In jail Max receives a postcard from them and feels betrayed but they come to his trial telling the judge that he is a nice man and should be set free. The judge sends them all to Sing Sing jail where they write another musical Prisoners of Love that goes to Broadway and becomes a hit, making them Kings of Broadway.

The musical opened at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace in 2001 as a pre-Broadway tryout before opening in Broadway where it played from 2001 till 2007. The show remained a mega hit, setting records for ticket sales and set out on tours across the US and UK. With especially wonderful performances by Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, the musical has been acclaimed by critics across the nation for its satirical as well as musical aspects. The Producers tickets are perceived as one’s chance to witness a classical comedy with all the beauties a great musical should have.
