The Other Place is a theatrical show that is perplexing and has dark comedy in it that is so captivating that from the moment the curtain is raised right till the end of the show you will be left completely mesmerized. The story of the show centers on the character of Juliana Smithton who is a successful neurologist. She is on the brink of developing a new medicine to cure the disease of dementia when her mind finally takes a toll on her. You get to see her life falling apart as her husband files for a divorce and her daughter elopes with a man who is much older to her. Juliana’s own health is not at its best when all of thing situations arise. Her character is seen getting puzzled with her own recollections but she does not know that. Ultimately, when she sets of to make a presentation to the drug company that she introduces the new medicine to that is when other characters on the stage as well as the audience begin to understand that she is suffering from the disease for which she has created a drug to cure.
 
The fact that absolutely nothing is as it seems to be in the play makes this play a masterpiece, written by the acclaimed playwright Sharr White, this is one of those shows that should not be missed by avid fans of theater. You will get to see suspense unfolding as factual pieces of information blur up with fiction. The past of the characters clashes with their present scenarios. The vague reality of Juliana, which is portrayed in an impeccable way by the Tony Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf, is boiling down to the surface. The entire play is mostly based on the thoughts and actions of Juliana. The 80 minute play keeps on building intense mystery from the time her illness is found right till the end. The most attractive aspect of the show is that just when you believe that you have finally found an understanding of what is really happening on the stage; it is exactly that moment when the writer of this brilliant play takes you on a whole new level. The whole time, the character of Juliana remains on stage. The electrifying yet fluid direction of Joe Mantello certainly enhances the whole experience. This star studded theatrical production is surely for those who love theatre.
 
Laurie Metcalf the main character of The Other Place has done a phenomenal job at portraying the character of Juliana Smithton. The show is an exciting yet fresh thriller that is written flawlessly by Sharr White. Joe Mantello the director of the play who has won the Tony Award twice before has accomplished the finest direction in this new play. On the 28^th of March in 2011, the show had its world premiere at the famous MCC Theatre. Due to its soaring success, the running dates of the play were extended. The play has been effectively nominated for one Drama League Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards and three Lucille Lortel Awards. For the portrayal of Juliana Smithton, Metcalf has fruitfully won a Lucille Lortel Award as well as an Obie Award.
