The inauguration of the ballet was performed in the year 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg, Russia. The ballet was choreographed by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. It was not well received by critics initially. After this production, another version of the Nutcracker began to be produced. Alexander Gorsky was the choreographer this time and he did a marvelous job. The ballet was performed at the Royal Opera House in 1927 and it went on to remove much of the criticism of the original production of 1892. Later, another version of the ballet was choreographed by Vasili Vainonen and was staged in 1934. Its debut was a remarkable success.
In 1934, the Nutcracker was presented for the first time in the United Kingdom. Nicholas Sergeyev staged the performance. In 1940, the ballet was performed in New York. For the play’s music, woodwinds, brass, voice and strings were used. In the modern day, this ballet is performed by various companies particularly during the Christmas season.
