One of the earliest recorded performances of the Merchant of Venice was held in the spring of 1605 and it was held at the Kind James court. The first performance of the play was followed by another one which was held just a few days later. It is believed that the play was showcased on other occasions as well in seventeenth century, but there aren’t any evidences in support of that fact. The next performance that was accounted for was the performance of the play’s stage adaptation by George Granville in 1701. The title of this production was The Jew of Venice in which the role of Bassanio was played by Thomas Betterton. This stage adaptation enjoyed much fame in its time, and its performances were well celebrated for the coming forty years. Granville made quite some changes as compared to the original text and added or extended certain scenes. In that version, the role of Shylock was comically played by Thomas Doggett. The return to the original text was made later in 1741 when a successful production by Charles Macklin went underway at the Drury Lane. It was this Charles Macklin production which supposedly made way for Edmund Kean to flaunt his talent as an actor.

Before Charles Macklin’s production, the role of Shylock was portrayed usually by a clown or a comedian, but Kean changed that and played the role of Shylock and established his reputation as a good actor. Since Kean played the role of Shylock sympathetically, all the actors from that point onwards portrayed the role in the same manner. However, this tradition was put to hold for a while when Edwin Booth portrayed the role as a simple villain. Following the popularity of the play, there have been several adaptations of the play in various forms of media. The first movie adaptation of the play emerged in 1914 when a silent film was released based on the text and was directed by Lois Weber. Weber also played the role of Portia and became first female director ever to direct a full movie in America. Afterwards the play was adapted as a television movie on three occasions and had witnessed four movie adaptations as well. There was a movie adaptation in 2004, directed by Michael, where the role of Shylock was played by Al Pacino.
