The Little Mermaid fairy tale that was penned by the famed author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837, animated by Walt Disney Pictures in 1989 as the memorable film The Little Mermaid, and rendered as The Little Mermaid musical in 2007. After going overboard during a storm and being rescued by a fast becoming lovesick Ariel, Prince Eric arranges for a ball for all the singing ladies of the land that draws a defiant Ariel away from her watery home and compels her to partake of Ursula’s magic, whereby becoming a voiceless human for three days. A truly dumbfound Ariel after being discovered ashore by Prince Eric, has a fabulous time whilst dining, dancing and touring the kingdom but has her romantic overtures being sabotaged by the electrifying Floatsam and Jetsam. After the third day ends with a still un-kissed Ariel, Ursual who’s also The Little Mermaid’s aunt, raises hell and high water during the royal ball but is vanquished by her niece, in a bid of girl-power twist upon the original story, when the latter smashes the magic shell upon sensing her father’s peril. A once again chirpy Ariel’s matrimonial bliss follows her father’s approval as The Little Mermaid show ends.

The Little Mermaid musical was conceived initially as a book by the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright ‘Doug Wright’. The show’s production team is led by director Francesca Zambello accompanied with the Grammy and Oscar winning composing team of Alan Menken and the later Howard Ashman. The lyrical duo of Menken and Glenn Slater have embellished the original animated The Little Mermaid’s score with 10 new songs that render the entire The Little Mermaid musical in a symphony of song and gaiety.
 
After a 2007 summer and fall session of tryouts at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, The Little Mermaid made its Broadway debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in January 2008 and ran till August of the following year, culminating in 50 previews and 685 performances. Propelled by the stellar performing prowess of Sierra Boggess as an endearing Ariel, The Little Mermaid netted 2 Tony Award nominations along with 3 Drama Desk and a whopping 8 in the 9th Annual Broadway.com Audience Awards. The musical’s score has already won accolades back in 1990 following the release of The Little Mermaid animated film by clinching 2 Academy Awards and 2 Grammys.
