Giacomo was notorious for the lavish life that he lived, where he was often indulged in elaborate and complicated affairs with European women, due to which his name became synonymous with the word “womanizer”. The opera will provide a bird’s eye view as to how Giacomo Casanova feels about his life as he approaches death. He is consumed by thoughts as to what his true purpose in life is, as he has spent all of his life being coveted by women and intertwined between affairs. During the first scene, Giacomo’s role is played by the Hollywood actor, John Malkovich as he brings to stage memories, lost love affairs and lust for new ones, along with developing a philosophical vision when it came to fields of medicine, cookery and fashion. During this time Giacomo is seen involved with several women such as Countess Isabella, who is the sister of his dear friend Karl Emanuel Count von Waldstein, along with the kitchen maid, the seamstress and even his nurse.
The next scene presents Giacomo’s association with several European cardinals, popes and royalty such as Mozart, Goethe, Voltaire, Figaro, Despina, Dorabella, Leporello Don Giovanni. During this time the opera presents some of the most popular and classic compositions, duet’s and arias by Da Ponte and Mozart. The music is presented by director, Haselbock along with two singers and the Orchester Wiener Akademie that was founded back in the year 1985. This orchestra has gained massive success over the years due to the contemporary sound the musicians bring to the stage. The orchestra has presented pieces by Hadyn, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Schumann, Bruckner and Liszt. Even though the way in which Mozart’s compositions have been presented may be unorthodox, this casual display of such music presents a light and often humorous atmosphere through which audiences can unconventionally listen to some of the greatest classic musical compositions of all time.
The chamber opera presents, starts off as Giacomo having a small stroke which leads him to think about life and one’s true purpose in it. As Giacomo recovers from the stroke, he is seen getting younger, stronger and fitter with a new view of life. He starts off by thinking about his entire journey through all of his affairs, cooking and eating lavishly, going on adventures and finally winning the heart of his one true love. In the final scene, Giacomo realizes that he should let go of his life as he has had one hell of a journey. He thinks of his final conquest as dying in a positive state of mind, victoriously and with that he passes on.
