The musical The Bridges of Madison County is based on a novel written by Robert James Waller in 1992. Selling over fifty million copies globally, the novel was ranked amongst the best selling books of the twentieth century. With music compositions and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, the book was adapted to a musical. Marsha Norman wrote the libretto for the musical whereas the sets are spectacularly designed by Michael Yeargan. The fascinating costumes are done by Catherine Zuber and lighting effects are a creation of Donald Holder.
Directed by Bartlett Sher, the musical premiered its first performance at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Aug 2013. The lead producers of the show are Stacey Mindich, Jerry Frankel and Jeffrey Richards joined by Red Mountain Theatre Company, Bellanca Smigel Rutter, Tulchin Bartner Productions, Aaron Priest, TheShubert Organization, Jay & Cindy Gutterman and Cathy Chernoff, Scott M. The story of the play revolves around the life of an Italian woman named Francesca living in Madison Country in the sixties time period. The vivacious country girl settles for a life with a US serviceman-a life that is no better than the life of animals on the farm she lives at. Eighteen years later her path crosses that of a photographer named Robert who asks for directions.
