The Tap Dogs is an idea which was conceived by Dein Perry, a dance director from Australia. Dein started to dance when he was only four years old. He began his career in dancing by working in different shows. Dein got the break he wanted when he was selected to be the lead of 42nd Street. He then went on to go beyond conventional tap dance boundaries. Now settled in Newcastle close to Sydney, he started a tap dance workshop. Newcastle had always been closely associated with industry and steel which would come in very handy in the years to follow in the construction of the sets used in the shows.

Teaming up with friends and colleagues from his previous dance classes, Dein decided to kick start a new tap dance show. Since Dein had worked in the steel industry before pursuing a career in dancing he decided to base the entire theme of the show around his experiences during that time. The group needed financing and that came in the shape of a special grant given to them by the Australian Government. That was the start of a dance school that was to go on to take the shape of the Tap Dogs.

It began with only half a dozen men coming together to perform. Dein took over as the leading figure of the group. In those early days the show was scheduled to be around eighty minutes in duration.  It wasn’t a traditional tap dance show. The Tap Dogs was tap dancing of the new millennium. It was fresh, it was scintillating and it was captivating.  The program made its debut in the first month of the year 1995 at the Sydney Theatre Festival. Their routines raised the roof and turned the group into stars.

That performance was followed by a show at the Sadler’s Well and a road trip around Australia. A performance at the famous West End followed. It was so well received that it earned Dein an Olivier Award. That wasn’t all, the Tap Dogs also went on to perform off-Broadway shows in New York. After mesmerizing one and all in different parts of the globe with their performances the group returned to their native Australia in 2000. They performed at the Sydney Olympics to that were being held the same year to a worldwide audience of well over three billions people. Then Dein came up with the movie Bootmen that was geared towards providing an insight to the people about how Tap Dogs worked.

Every show starts with a dose of humor and then a surprise with a lot of brilliance to go along. That carries on all through to the very end of the show.  The routines have a special rhythm to them. The arms and mouths of the artists on stage can make a lot of random movements but the movement of the feet is nothing short of poetry in motion. Their feet movements generate all kinds of sounds like horses running and a train moving etc. The lighting, the movement and the changing of the steps are done in such an amazing way that it is made to feel like a natural part of the whole show.

The Tap Dogs have been a revelation that has brought about a revolution in the world of tap dancing.  It has not only given this form of dancing a new look but has given it an entirely new meaning and direction. The on show brilliance has also won the group some of the biggest awards in the business. Now that they are headed this way once again, buy Tap Dogs tickets and catch the spectacle live.
