The plot of Sweet Charity revolves around a woman named Charity Hope Valentine. She is a dance hall hostess by profession who works at the Fandango Ballroom. Charity is looking to find her soul mate who would to love her like she wants to be loved. The story is based on her experiences with three different men and what happens to all those three chapters. The first guy is Charlie, the second one is Vittorio Vidal the movie star and the third one is Oscar. She meets all three men at different phases in her life. Those meetings lead to unbelievable consequences. All three men treat Charlie differently and the remarkable portrayal is what has kept theater fans hooked to this fabulous play for such a long time.
The musical is inspired the screenplay of Nights of Cabiria which was written by Federico Fellini. The music of the play was done by Cy Coleman, the lyrics were written by Dorothy Fields and the book was scribbled down by Neil Simon. Bob Fosse took over the dual responsibilities of choreography and direction for the debut production. Sweet Charity had its tryouts at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit. The play then moved to the Palace Theatre on Broadway and made its debut there on 29th January, 1966. Everything about that production received immense positive acclaim from everyone across the board. The success paved the way for it to get an incredible twelve Tony nominations. The run went on till 15th July, 1968 for an impressive six hundred and eight performances to go with ten previews. After enjoying such tremendous success it was only natural that this wonderful musical was shown at the famous West End as well. That debut in London arrived in 1967 October at the Prince of Wales Theatre. The run went on for four hundred and seventy six performances.
The Sweet Charity underwent its first revival at the Minskoff Theatre. The date was 27th April, 1986 and that Broadway re-run became an instant hit as well. It was earned multiple Tony nominations and won four out of those. Then came its performance at the benefits concert in 1998. The play made its appearance at London once again in 199 on 19th May, 1998. Christina Applegate was brought onboard for its next big Broadway revival in 2005. That run began on 4th May, 2005 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Keeping up with the tradition that productions went on to become a huge hit as well. Every aspect was met with widespread acclaim. The run also went on to earn three Tony awards nomination as well. That was followed by a revival run in September next year and that road trip carried on till August next year. Two more reincarnations in London came after that. The start date for the first one was 21st November, 2009 and the second one was 4th May, 2010. The latter run earned multiple Olivier award nominations to earn another feather in the cap of this extraordinary musical.
The Sweet Charity has also been shown in countries like Sweden, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. The original production and the revivals have won some of the biggest awards a play can get to etch its name among the most popular musicals of all time.
