The original West End production was directed by Trevor Nunn with Bob Avian as the choreographer. The production opened in July 1993. The cast included Patti LuPone (Norma Desmond), Daniel Benzali, Kevin Anderson (Joe Gillis) and Meredith Braun (Betty Schaefer).
In November 1994, the musical was opened on Broadway with a huge ticket sale in advance running for 997 performances. The original Broadway production won a Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Original Source, and Best Book of a Musical among others, along with a Drama Desk Award in the year 1995. The show went on its first national tour around USA in 1996 and finished by the beginning of 1997. The musical toured United Kingdom with a much simpler and completely new set starring Faith Brown opposite Earl Carpenter. The tour ended in 2002 in Manchester gaining excellent feedback with respectable ticket sales.
Sunset Boulevard was acclaimed worldwide and went on opening a production in Germany in 1995 casting Sue Mathys and Helen Schneider. The Toronto production opened in 1995 starring Diahann Carroll in the lead role. Her acting was appreciated by the critics as well. It also had Rex Smith, Walter Charles and Anita Louise in prominent roles. Another production opened in Australia in 1996 at Regent Theatre. The cast featured Debra (Norma), Catherine Porter (Betty), and Hugh Jackman (Joe). In 2005 it was announced that the Paramount Pictures will be developing a movie adaptation of Sunset Boulevard.
