Brainchild of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine are the creative geniuses behind, Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim’s beautiful music is the soul of the show whereas Lapine is the author of the musical’s book. Over the years, Sunday in the Park with George has been enjoyed by millions around the globe.
The musical is based on the painting of the famous French post-impressionist painter, Georges Seurat titled, ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.’ It saw the light of day when James Lapine persuaded Sondheim to make his return to theater after he decided to write mystery novels. Both got inspired by the work of Seurat and they spent quite a while at the prestigious Art institute of Chicago in order to study the painting. It was not long before Lapine observed that there is one important figure not in canvas, which was the artist himself. This led them to create Sunday in the Park with George.
Sunday Morning in the Park debuted Off-Broadway at New York City’s famous venue, Playwrights Horizon in the summer of 1983. It ran for twenty five performances and featured the Tony Award winning stars, Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters who appeared in the lead roles of, George Seurat and Dot/Marie respectively. The musical immediately won the hearts of theatergoers and fans.
One year later in 1984, A Sunday in the Park with George premiered on Broadway and was staged at the Booth Theatre. The show was directed by James Lapine while Tony Straiges did the scenic design and Richard Nelson handled the responsibilities of the lighting designer. The original Broadway production mostly received positive reviews from the critics. It earned ten Tony Awards nominations out of which the musical won two including one in the category of the ‘Best Scenic Design.’ In addition to that, Sunday in the Park with George also bagged eight Drama Desk Awards including one for, ‘Outstanding Musical.’
The musical then made its debut on West End and was seen at the Royal National Theatre in 1990. The production had the Laurence Olivier Award winning actor, Philip Quast as Geroges Seurat and Olivier Award winning English actress, Maria Friedman as Dot/Marie. In 2005, Sunday in the Park with George was revived for West End and was performed at the Menier Chocolate Factory. It concluded its performances next year in 2006.
