Bruce Springsteen – The Musical Genius from Long Branch, New Jersey
Bruce Springsteen can be labeled as a “complete rock & roller”. Combining strains of R&B, blues, rockabilly and Appalachian music, The Boss’s music finds pleasures in the daily struggles of American life. His father was a bus driver, who was mostly unemployed and it was his mother who was the main breadwinner in the family.
He was raised a Catholic but rejected the strictures imposed upon him at his Catholic school. Later in his life, Springsteen as a rock & roller would find his identity in his music. Rock music is all about the need for freedom and Springsteen’s fans and critics saw early strains of it in him as a child in a Catholic school. Though it would be wrong to assume that he ever rebelled against his faith; matter of fact, The Boss is known for a few rock-filled traditional Irish-Catholic hymns. He is also on record for crediting his faith as being the biggest influence on his music.
Springsteen – One of the Greatest Guitar Players
Even his critics admit that there are very few, if any, who could coax emotions out of an instrument made of wood and steel as well as The Boss. Ranked at No.96 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists, The Boss can play the guitar better than Steve Jones, Alex Lifeson, Thurston Moore and Lindsey Buckingham. If you are interested in listening to The Boss at his guitar best then sample “Tougher Than the Rest,” “Adam Raised a Cain” and “Born to Run.”
The Boss’s Hits: Albums & Singles
If you are looking for the best of Springsteen’s albums then start with his 1973, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. When Springsteen first started out he was often compared with Bob Dylan. This album gave him a new identity. “Kitty’s Back” and “Rosalita” were two of the biggest hits from this album.
The Boss followed up with Born to Run in 1975. This album was all about the labors and glories of aspiring to greatness. In 1978, he came out with Darkness on the Edge of Town. “Racing in the Street” which is Springsteen’s most popular car song, was from this album. The River, another of Springsteen’s most popular albums came out in 1980. Another of The Boss’s greatest albums Nebraska was released in 1982. One of the songs from this album, “Reason to Believe” is about the singer’s search for faith that inspires faith itself. In 1984, Born in the U.S.A. was released. The Boss released The Rising in 2002. It was his first album since the Eighties and was largely in response to 9/11.
Early on in his career, The Boss set out to make the greatest rock record and released “Born to Run” in 1975. This is his most popular song of all time and chronicles the journey of young lovers on the highways of his home state, New Jersey. Another of Springsteen’s great “Thunder Road” also came from his album, Born to Run. It’s a cinematic tale of redemption. “Born in the U.S.A.”, The Boss’s magnum opus was released in 1984 and remains a fan favorite after all these years.
