Sleep No More is a site specific theatrical work that was brought forward in the year 2011 by the Punchdrunk Company. This play is a recreation of the company’s original London production of 2003. The original production was brought forth as a result of a partnership between Punchdrunk and Boston’s American Repertory Theatre. The production was based on the infamous work of William Shakespeare that is popularly known as Macbeth. For those who wish to know Punchdrunk is a British performing arts company that was established back in the year 2000. This company is one of a kind production house that focuses on immersive presentations in which the audiences have an option of moving around during an ongoing event freely and choose whatever they wish to watch from a number of ongoing performances. These types of performances are given a specific name i.e. “Promenade Theatre”.
This company that will present the show was established by Felix Barrett who is also the current artistic director. Other members who complete the Punchdrunk team consists of Maxine Doyle who is the choreographer and the associate director, Griselda Yorke, the executive director, Stephen Dobbie, the head of the graphic and sound bloc, Peter Higgin, the enrichment director, Colin Nightingale, the producer and Livi Vaughan and Bea Minns, the two design associates. The type of performances that this company presents includes a set of ongoing performances that move around a large set, mostly four or five storied building. Audiences have the option to either follow these performances around the set as they move or roam around freely as they wish to. Several productions previously produced by this company include The Cherry Orchard, The House of Oedipus and The Moon slave that were brought forward in 2000, Johnny Formidable: Mystery at the Pink Flamingo presented in 2001, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Chair showcased in 2002, The Tempest and Sleep No More that were held in 2003 and the most recent productions; And Darkness Descended, Black Diamond, The Crash of the Elysium and the reincarnation of Sleep No More in 2011.
The upcoming show is scheduled to be held at The McKittrick Hotel which was a luxury hotel constructed back in the year 1939. It was built with the aim of making it one of the finest hotels in the area of New York, but due to the outbreak of the Second World War, the hotel wasn’t completed and it was locked up. After seventy two years, The McKittrick Hotel is now finally opening up with the partnership between Punchdrunk and EMURSIVE, to present a recreation of Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy, which is considered to be one of his classiest works.
Sleep No More has been able to capture the critics’ attention and has received great reviews by some of the most prestigious institutions over the years such as New York Times, New York Post, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Reuters, BBC, Elle, The New Yorker and NYT-Theatre. It has also been able to win several awards such as the Drama Desk Award that it won in the year 2011 for Unique Theatrical Experience and two Obie Awards that it received in the same year in the categories of Choreography and Design. The upcoming presentation features rooms that have been transformed to look like an asylum, children’s bedrooms, doctor’s offices, cemetery, shops, inmate cells, indoor courtyards and a ballroom. The performance is designed in such a way that there is no particular program schedule given to those who are attending and the actors do not have any lines or dialogues to speak.
