When Sister Act, the movie was released in 1992, it was hailed as one of the funniest films of the time. The stage adaptation of the 1992 flick includes composition from one of the most successful theatre composers, Alaun Menken, who already has a number of highly successful theatre shows to his credit like Beauty and the Beast. The show opened in Alliance Theatre in the City of Atlanta in 2007 where it ran for a full month. The star cast of the show included Dawnn Lewis in the lead character of Deloris and Elizabeth Ward Land. This production got much praise from the critics and was just as big a success as the original production.  This production in particular stayed too true with the movie and kept the weakest moments of the movie and turned them into some real gems. This worked well for most critics and Curt Holman, an Atlanta based critic, was impressed with the gutsy attempt.

After the 2007 production, Sister Act finally reached West End. The West End production was peculiar in the sense that it was produced by Whoopi Goldberg herself in collaboration with Stage Entertainment and also because Peter Schnieder, who is the original director of the production, directed the West End production as well. The show will expectedly run for years two years and then finally close down in 2010. The West End cast includes the stunning 24 year old actor Patina Miller in the role of Deloris, after a series of long and tiring auditions. Whoopi Goldberg herself is expected to join the cast soon enough in the roll of not Deloris but Mother Superior. The production is expected to finally hit Broadway too soon enough.

The production has received several awards and nominations for the outstanding productions. Patina Miller won the award for 2010 Whatsonstage.com Theatre Goers Choice Awards in the category of Best Actress in a Musical.
