In 1997, their life story was adapted for a Broadway musical written by Bill Russell, titled Side Show. Russell also penned down the lyrics for the musical whereas Henry Krieger provided the music.
The show initially had a short run, but it has once again been revived under the direction of Bill Condon. Opened at the St. James Theatre on Broadway, this production features notable actors such as Emily Padgett, Erin Davie, Matthew Hydzik, Robert Joy and Ryan Silverman among others.
The show follows the adventures and struggles of the British conjoined twins as they rise from small town performances to big city arena circuits. It also reveals how the twins juggled their showbiz life with the innocent desire to lead a normal life with a loving husband and kids. With love interests Terry Connor and Buddy Foster stepping into their lives, both Daisy and Violet realize that the very thing that makes them different… makes them extraordinary!
Side Show first premiered on Broadway in fall 1997 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. It was directed by Robert Longbottom and featured Alice Ripley as Violet Hilton and Emily Skinner as Daisy Hilton. It received widespread critical acclaim but was closed early the following year. In total, it had ninety one performances that bagged nominations in four categories at the 1998 Tony Awards. Both Ripley and Skinner were nominated for ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical’. Ripley also won a nomination for the same category at the Drama Desk Awards.
Later in 1998, Side Show was opened as a post-Broadway production at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts by TheatreWorks. This production was directed by Robert Kelley and Bick Goos and featured Kristin Behrendt as Daisy and Debra Wiseman as Violet. The San Francisco-based theater company took Side Show to a new level of national fame. The production received the Garland Award from Los Angeles and a few Dean Goodman Critics Choice Awards. The show had to add two extra performances as it was sold out soon after the announcement.
The musical was revived once again in winter 2013 by director Bill Condon for a one month run at the La Jolla Playhouse in California. It featured Emily Padgett as Daisy and Erin Davie as Violet. The show was critically acclaimed for adding more biographical and historical details about the conjoined twins’ life. It had a darker theme than the previous production to make it as real as possible. By summer of the following year, it opened once again for a month at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
The production by Bill Condon opened for previews on Broadway in fall 2014 at the St. James Theatre. Erin Davies and Emily Padgett reprised their roles along with the rest of the cast from the 2013 revival. Condon wrote additional book material for the musical in an effort to give it his own touch while retaining the musical’s original grandeur. He also added various new songs into the new version and cut out a few as well. The list of new songs includes “Very Well Connected,” “Stuck With You,” “Tunnel of Love” and “A Great Wedding Show” among others.
