After the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s famous novel, Sense and Sensibility, the musical was produced . This musical is the product of the hard work of director-choreographer, Marcia Milgrom Dodge and her creative team. Among the team members include David Loud, James F. Ingalls, Allen Moyer and ESosa, the Tony Award nominees costume designer. The lyrics of the musical are by the lyricist and librettist Jeffrey Haddow and are composed by Neal Hampton. With Dodge, the Best Director Tony Award nominee for Ragtime and one of the leading directors of the country, the premiere was a first-class Broadway level production as they call it in the theatre world. The musical received standing ovations at the Colorado New Play Summit.
The cast of the Sense and Sensibility was as talented as its creative team. The role of Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, was played by Christine Noll, the Tony Award nominee from Ragtime and Brandi Burkhardt from Tale of Two Cities. Robert Petkoff of Ragtime and Spamalot portrayed Colonel Brandon, the quiet, grave gentleman. Among the other characters include Edward Ferrars played by Sebastian Arcelus, John Willoughby by Jeremiah James and Mrs. Dashwood by Kay Wallbye. Sense and Sensibility, a two act musical is about the complex relationships of Dashwood family with Sir John and Mrs. Jennings.
The Act I shows the beginnings of a new relationship as the Colonel falls in love with Marianne. The music and lyrics of the musical are given by Joshua Tyra and include the songs like ‘Don’t Try to Change her,’ ‘That’s Not Love,’ ‘Summer’s Day’ and ‘I Must Have Sense’ among many others.
The musical is based on the first published work of Jane Austen whose story revolves around two sisters who are almost opposite of each other in their approach to the world. It is a romantic novel which was published in 1811 and portrays the life and loves of these sisters and their experience of love, romance and heartbreak. The major characters of the novels includes Marianne and Elinor, two sisters, Edward Ferrars, Colonel Brandon and John Willoughby. Owing to its popularity, the novel has been adapted any times. The first adaptation of Sense and Sensibility was in the form of a 1981 TV serial which was directed by Rodney Bennerr. Later, in 1995 it was adapted for the film by Emma Thompson. In the film, Emma starred as the Elinor Dashwood while the character of Marianne was played by Kate Winslet.
Marianne is passionate and romantic while the other sister, Elinor is the rational and organized one. In the very beginning of the story the sisters along with their mother are seen moving to southern England from their home in Norland Park. This is where both discover the new love; Elinor finds Edward and Marianne falls for Colonel. With its unforgettable songs and Jane Austen’s trademark wit, the show turned out to be the most talked about musical of the year, making huge sales of Sense and Sensibility the musical tickets.
