Prairie Home Companion is a famous live radio production. This show is more like a variety show that has been formed by Garrison Keillor. Keillor is also the host of the show. The two hour long program is aired live during 5 to 7 PM on Saturdays. The show is originated from the popular Fitzgerald Theater which is located in Saint Paul in Minnesota. His storytelling segment on the program is a mega hit also known as “News from Lake Wobegon”.
 
The show has been produced by the acclaimed Prairie Home Productions and it is successfully distributed by the known American Public Media. The history of the program that you can hear and be a part of today has existed in a comparable form in the decade of the 1970s. The show has also borrowed its title name from one of the radio programs that were similar in nature and were aired in 1969. The name of the show comes from the Prairie Home Cemetery which is located in Moorhead in Minnesota. In 2006, a movie which took its inspiration from the show was written by Garrison Keillor with the same name was released. The movie was directed by Robert Altman and it featured not just Garrison Keillor but also Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, John C. Reily, Tommy Lee Jones and Lily Tomlin.
 
The basic genre of the Prairie Home Companion is comedy along with music variety. The total running time of this show is approximately two hours. The home station is Minnesota Public Radio. The syndicates are American Public Media and the executive producer of the show is KSJN. The program was first aired on the 6^th of July in 1974 till 1987. It then made a comeback in 1989 and ran till 1993 under the title of American Radio Company; the show has been effectively running under its current name from 1993 till the present day. The opening theme of the program is Tishomingo Blues.
 
As the history suggests, one of the earliest similar types of radio programs to have ran on the radio also hold a bit of familiarity to the current show which is most commonly heard live on Saturday evenings. This was basically a morning show which ran from 6am till 9am on the acclaimed Minnesota Public Radio.
 
Garrison Keillor had been researching on the Grand Ole Opry to write an article. As he researched, he was inspired to do a variety show of his own on the radio.
