In 1935, another brilliant opera made its way to the opera houses and was known as Porgy and Bess. It wasn’t the first time that the African-American culture and life was portrayed in any entertainment, but an opera was just the thing needed. Based on the novel, ‘Porgy’ by DuBose Heyward, George Gershwin gave the music of the opera while the libretto was given by Dubose Heyward himself. Porgy and Bess was premiered in 1935 in New York but with little appreciation. After the 1976 success of the show at the Houston Grand Opera, Porgy and Bess was taken to Radio City Music Hall, The Metropolitan Opera, Nashville Symphony Orchestra, New York City Opera, Welsh National Opera, Royal Festival Hall and Deutsche Oper Berlin and other so many theatres. Porgy, Bess, Crown and Sportin’ Life are the main characters of the play while other characters include Robbins, Serena, Jake, Clara, Maria, Peter, Lily, Frazier, Scipio and Mr. Archdale.  This three act show takes the audience to the world of the black beggar, Porgy and the girl, Bess who he rescues from the evil of his lover, Crown.  
 
The show is filled with brilliant songs like “Summertime”, “My Man’s Gone Now”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and ”I Loves You, Porgy” are some of the famous scores of the opera. The songs alone are enough for the audience to indulge in something beautiful. Gershwin took the European operatic music and mixed it with the traditional American folk and jazz music. The resultant fusion is one major factor in the fame of this opera. The show was revived on Broadway in 1942 when it was shown at the Majestic Theatre. Later it was taken to Europe and was shown in Copenhagen at the Royal Danish Theatre. The story of Porgy and Bess is presented brilliantly, taking place in Charleston, South Carolina, in one of its slums. How a physically impaired black beggar tries to rescue Bess from Crown, who is also her lover but is a brutal and domineering person. The plot takes place in Catfish Row, which is a fictional place in Charleston.
