Philip Glass Tickets
Philip Morris Glass, noted American composer, has earned himself the authority to become one of the most influential names in the music business. In the initial years he was labeled by many as a ‘minimalist’ since his composed works had certain repetitive structures to them, typical of a minimalistic composition. However, he has shed that label commendably; his music has grown with him, and his composing skills are class apart. His composing style is self-claimed to be ‘Classist’ since he has trained both in ‘counterpoint’ and in ‘harmony.’ Additionally, he has extensively studied the works of great classic composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He has proven himself to be prolific composer, composing brilliant harmonious collections for the musical group that he himself founded, called the Philip Glass Ensemble.

From a young age, Glass was interested in music above all other things. The fact that his father owned a record store meant that Glass had the immense privilege of growing up listening to all kinds of music. This included a lot of records from great musicians that might have eventually gone unsold, but not before Glass heard it. As a child, the first instrument Glass learned to play was the flute at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. The first composition that Glass wrote was a twelve-tone string trio while he was in Chicago learning about various styles of music. In 1964, Glass got a Fulbright Scholarship to Paris where he was able to study with the Nadia Boulanger for two years. Boulanger was a gifted composition teacher, and the person who introduced Bach and Mozart to Glass. Philip Glass says himself that it is these two incredible composers that still affect his music more than any other.
While in Paris, Glass was introduced not just to great music but also to exception film and theatre. Soon he made friends with several actors, directors and visual artists. These friendships resulted in him meeting the people who became a part of the first theatre group that he founded himself called the Mabou Mines. A member of the group, Lee Breuer, produced Brecht’s ‘Mother Courage and Her Children,’ in 1966. Glass had the honor to play the role of Music Director for the same production which included an incredible theatre score by Paul Dessau (famous composer). After experimenting with theatrical music, Glass moved on to work on a film score in 95-96 with Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha (two of the time’s leading Indian music composers). This partnership made a lasting effect on the musical style of Philip Glass, and many of his compositions include repetitive rhythms inspired by Indian music.
Since them, Glass produced several more film scores, three of which went on to be nominated for the Academy Awards. Apart from film score, Glass produced exceptional musical pieces including Strung Out, How Now, Music in the Shape of a Square, and 1+1. All of these had minimalistic pieces yet were loved by his audience. Glass began to play in concerts which gained popularity quickly. Prominent amongst these have been the Portrait Trilogy (75-86) and the Cocteau Trilogy (91-96) in which he revisited and reinvented his musical style to morph from minimalist to classist.
Glass has truly proven that he is far more than a ‘minimalistic’ composer. In recent years, Philip Glass has expanded into various forms of music. He has composed several musical theatre works, operas, film scores, instrumental sonatas, chamber music, solo works, eleven concertos and ten symphonies. In the American music industry, Glass is accepted and acknowledged as a musical genius. Buy Philip Glass tickets to enjoy his unique, melodious, and class apart compositions.
