In 1963, the Pennsylvania Ballet was founded by Barbara Weisberger, protégée and student to the legendary and iconic George Balanchine. Today, the Pennsylvania Ballet is one of the greatest ballet companies in the US and is located in the city of Philadelphia within the US state of Pennsylvania. Today, the Pennsylvania Ballet has Roy Kaiser, formerly the principal dancer, as its artistic director. However, it all began back in 1963 when Barbara Weisberger, protégée to the legendary George Balanchine received a grant as part of the Ford Foundation initiative to developed professional dance companies. From then onwards, this company rose to become one of the best in the US and the world as well as part of the culture of Philadelphia. This amazing cultural institution is renowned for its energetic and enchanting performances. As of its founding in the sixties, the Pennsylvania Ballet soon became a leading regional ballet and within five years of its formation, it made its first national performance and bathing in the limelight. In 1968, the Pennsylvania Ballet performed at the New York CityCenter, one of the greatest venues in America, that was massively successful.
Soon after the New York CityCenter performance, the Pennsylvania Ballet kicked off an awesome national tour and string of performances that went on for many years. This ballet company even appeared on the Dance in America series on the PBS channel and by the seventies, the Pennsylvania Ballet was the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s official ballet company. In the eighties, Pennsylvania Ballet joined up with the Milwaukee Ballet to create one single ballet company; the new company had forty three dancers and a larger repertory, a first at the time. And then, in 1995, yet another first occurred for the Pennsylvania Ballet when the company selected its first homegrown artistic director, Roy Kaiser, who had formerly been the principal dancer.
Today, the Pennsylvania Ballet regularly performs at venues such as the JohnFKennedyCenter for the Performing Arts and the New York CityCenter, as well as internationally performing at events such as the Edinburgh International Festival. The Pennsylvania Ballet had fourteen members of its ballet company make up part of the cast of the movie, Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel. This season, the Pennsylvania Ballet will perform a Russian Suite Ratmansky & Balanchine at the Academy of Music, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music, Pushing Boundaries at the Merriam Theater, Messiah at the Academy of Music, Peter Pan at the Academy of Music and N. Y. Export Opus Jazz at the Merriam Theater.
