The show was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, extended to an hour’s length and broadcast nationally starting in September 1986. This syndicated show was viewed by twice as many people as Donahue’s, soon becoming the number one among day time talk shows in America. In the initial years, the program was categorized as a tabloid talk show, but by the mid nineties, Winfrey adopted a newer format, accommodating wider topics like geopolitics, heart disease, meditation, spirituality, interviewing high-profile personalities on social issues such as charity work, substance abuse, or cancer. She also began televised giveaways in her shows, including gifting each audience members a trip to Australia (sponsored by Australian tourism) or a new car (sponsored by General Motors).
