America’s favorite talk show host, TV personality, producer, media proprietor and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey is perhaps best recognized for her self-titled award-winning talk show. The latter has been placed among the highest-rated programs in the history of its kind, and was syndicated nationally through 1986 to 2011. Alongside, Winfrey has been noted for being one of the wealthiest African Americans of the Twentieth Century, as well as the most prominent black philanthropist in America’s history, who for sometime was also the only black billionaire on the globe. Through the enormous power of the media, Winfrey created a rather intimate and confessional form of personal expression in media that had not been known before, so that she is credited for giving rise to a whole new genre of tabloid talk show. The show, as per a Yale study, has broken twentieth century taboos, allowing room for LGBT people in the mainstream.

Winfrey has made an unmatched connection with people from all over the world for over twenty-five years. Her many accomplishments as a world media leader as well as a philanthropist, have made her one of the most inspiring, admired and respected figures today.  It is thus no surprise why Oprah Winfrey tickets are so wildly sought-after by various kinds of people, all of whom unite under the umbrella of OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).

Oprah Winfrey was born to a poor teenage single mother in rural Mississippi, from where she was later taken to and raised in a more inner-city neighborhood of Milwaukee. During her childhood she was confronted with many challenges and hardships, claiming to have been raped at nine, and getting pregnant at just fourteen; her child died as an infant. She was then sent to live with the man who became a father figure to her, who was a barber in Tennessee. There she got a job at a radio station while still attending high school, and became an anchor of local evening news by the time she was nineteen. Soon enough she transferred to an arena for day-time talk show, where a third-rated Chicago talk show bumped up to first rate because of her. Following the boost, she got to launch her own company that was internationally syndicated.

Movie critic Roger Ebert convinced Winfrey to sign a syndication contract with King World, predicting that her show would gross forty-times more revenue as his own TV program, At the Movies. The show was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, extended to an hour’s length and broadcast nationally starting in September 1986. This syndicated show was viewed by twice as many people as Donahue’s, soon becoming the number one among day time talk shows in America. In the initial years, the program was categorized as a tabloid talk show, but by the mid nineties, Winfrey adopted a newer format, accommodating wider topics like geopolitics, heart disease, meditation, spirituality, interviewing high-profile personalities on social issues such as charity work, substance abuse, or cancer. She also began televised giveaways in her shows, including gifting each audience members a trip to Australia (sponsored by Australian tourism) or a new car (sponsored by General Motors).

Besides doing her talk show, interviewing celebrities, publishing her own magazine O, The Oprah Magazine, and doing radio shows, Oprah Winfrey has also worked in several films and other TV productions including The Butler, Sesame Street, 30 Rock, Ocean’s Thirteen, Bee Movie, Princess and the Frog, Charlotte’s Web, The Hughleys, Home Improvement, Our Friend, Martin, Beloved, Before Women Had Wings, Ellen, All American Girl, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Lincoln, Gabriel’s Fire, Brewster Place, Native Son and The Color Purple. The latter brought her significant critical acclaim in the shape of nominations for a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award, both of which were in the category of Best Supporting Actress. This extraordinary philanthropist and world media leader has often been identified as arguably, the most influential woman on the globe.
