About the Oklahoma City Ballet
Operating since 1963, the Oklahoma City Ballet has been inspiring both its artists and the audience with its amalgamation of contemporary and classical dance performances. Under the leadership of several Artistic Directors the company flourished, coming up with fresh productions as well as the reincarnations of the classics.
In 2008, for the first time in its history, the Oklahoma City Ballet appointed its own student as the Artistic Director and the reins were given to Robert Mills. 2018 will mark Mills’ 11th year as the force behind The Nutcracker, the annual production that draws crowds from all over the region. Every year Oklahoma City Ballet: The Nutcracker tickets are purchased by people from Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and other states.
The upcoming production comprises a total of 160 dancers which includes the Oklahoma City Ballet’s principal dancers and around 80 children from Yvonne Chouteau School. An enormous production, the backstage crew is separate as the set design requires a lot of moving parts – big piece scenery and even the costumes.
The Nutcracker – A Forever Holiday Classic
For aspiring ballet dancers and balletomanes, The Nutcracker is a dream come true. A rich production, no matter which ballet company is presenting it, the holiday spectacle is dizzying and dazzling with its illustrious roles, costumes and of course choreography.
The Nutcracker has captivated audiences since 1816 when E.T.A. Hoffman wrote the original story titled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. French playwright Alexandre Dumas penned a lighter version “The Tale of the Nutcracker” and adapted it for stage, turning it into a full length ballet. The very first production premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in 1892. And ironically it wasn’t received very well.
It was after the ballet went out of its country of birth and landed at the New York City that it finally soared. Choreographer George Balanchine presented his version in 1954 at the City Center and from there onwards many productions spurred.
Today, The Nutcracker has become an institution and attending it a holiday tradition. The simplicity and purity of the story is what makes it a magical Christmas show. It’s quite easy to imagine yourself a part of Clara’s fairytale no matter what your age or experience.
The Nutcracker by the Oklahoma City Ballet
According to the Artistic Director Robert Mills, “it is hard to imagine a more ideal holiday stage production for families to enjoy than The Nutcracker”.
The Oklahoma City Ballet’s production sticks close to the original version by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Young girl Clara and her toy nutcracker enter the world of magic as the clock strikes midnight and from there onwards everything is full of adventure with the gingerbread soldiers, army of toys and mice and the evil Mouse King. Sugar Plum Fairy and the Land of Sweets all make The Nutcracker a joyous and colorful spectacle.
Having a child as the central character and a story wrapped around Christmas Eve is perhaps what makes the ballet enormously popular with families.
Oklahoma City Ballet: The Nutcracker neatly ties magical experience into the season and puts holiday spirit into the audience. From the magnificent sets and costumes to the re-choreographed sequence for the Snow Scene, Mills “Nutcracker” both delights and intrigues. It’s a holiday production not to be missed.
