The production is based on the novel of same name by Charles Dickens. Rupert Holmes has written the book, orchestrations, music and lyrics of the musical. The central plot of the production has been taken from Dickens novel. But to add to the appeal of the show elements of music hall and pantomime have also been included. Most of the characters are similar to the characters in the novel. The added character is that of the Chairman which has been inspired by the music hall theatre style. The character acts as the leader of action that unfolds on the stage and guides the audience through the show. Another added character is that of the Lead Boy. This character is played by a female cast member dressed as a man. Together these two characters involve the audience to decide the direction the production is going to take.

The stage performance is a play within a play. The show opens with the members of London's Music Hall Royale getting ready to stage a performance of Dickens novel Mystery of Edwin Drood. The main character in the play is played by Edwin Drood, who mysteriously disappears in the first act. Other main characters are played by his fiancée Rosa Bud and his uncle John Jasper. Upon his sudden disappearance Edwin Drood is perceived to be dead. The rest of the play tries to solve the mystery surrounding his death.

Dickens was writing and publishing his novel in episodes and his sudden death left the novel unfinished. Over the period of time there have been many speculations as to what might have been the ending and the novel has come to be a literary curiosity. The musicals’ ending is left for the audience to decide. Everyone on the stage is a suspect till the audiences decide by majority vote the identity of the killer. The novel has also been adapted thrice for film productions as well. But the musical with all its uniqueness has been the most stimulating adaption of the Dickens work.
