The Moscow Ballet's first artistic director for its North American tour was Stanislav Vlasov. He was formerly the principal artist at the famous Bolshoi Ballet and his first performance in the US took place in 1957. He led the Moscow Ballet to great heights during his tenure as the artistic director.
The company's North American tour is mostly for productions of the Great Russian Nutcracker. The production features soloists from the National Ballet of Czechoslovakia, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet.
In 1996, the company performed its flagship production, Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutracker at Constitution Hall in Washington DC for the first time. This production follows Tchaikovsky's original closely, in so far as the musical score is concerned.
However, the Great Russian Nutcracker is somewhat different when it comes to the two acts. The first act's story is the same as Tchaikovsky's but the second act follows a different story. In it, Clara and her Prince visit the Land of Peace and Harmony, instead of the Sugar Plum Fairy. This story change is in line with the Moscow Ballet's motto of international and cultural unity.
