Monty Python's Spamalot is a popular musical based on the comedy movie called Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The movie was released in 1975 and became an immediate hit. Eric Idle, one of the six members of the Monty Python team, decided to produce a musical based on the story of this movie in 2004. In addition to being a parody of the Arthurian Legend like the movie, Spamalot is also a parody of the Broadway theatre. Eric Idle, John Du Prez, and Neil Innes created the music for this show. The book and lyrics for this musical were also written by Eric Idle. The tile Spamalot comes from one of their comedy sketches in which "Spam" (processed/precooked meat product) is served with almost all items on the breakfast menu.
The show was first previewed in 2004 at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago. It was premiered at the same venue in 2005 and the audiences loved it. Eric Idle went on to produce it on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre in New York. Spamalot's Broadway debut was directed by Mike Nichols and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw. It was seen by millions of people and went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005. They began their first tour of the US in 2006 with Michael Siberry playing the role King Arthur, and staged the final performance of this tour in 2009 at the Segerstrom Hall in California. It won the Best New Musical category in 2007 at the Touring Broadway Awards. They have also toured the UK and performed in many countries across the globe including Australia, The Czech Republic, Spain, and Sweden.
The play is divided into two acts that roughly coincide with the plot of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But the musical differs significantly from the movie in direction and story, which also includes a parody of the Broadway theatre. However, it features almost all of the major characters that were in the movie, and includes a few additional ones. Not only did it become a success in terms of receiving worldwide recognition and popularity, but it also did exceptionally well at the box. There were so many advance ticket bookings that it made a new record in the history of Broadway box office. Spamalot even made a record for the World's Largest Coconut Orchestra in 2006 which was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. A documentary on the history of Spamalot was also broadcasted on television.
Monty Python's Spamalot has a rich collection of original musical scores and songs. It includes popular numbers such as "Come with Me- King Arthur, Lady of the Lake, and Laker girls" and "The Song That Goes like This". It even features "Knights of the Round Table" and "Brave Sir Robin", which were in the original movie. Spamalot has received many awards and nominations including the prestigious Tony Award for the Best Musical of 2005 and Best Direction of a Musical, which went to Mike Nichols.
