The Metropolitan Opera was established on the 28th of April, 1880 in New York City. The general manager of the organization is Peter Gelb, with James Levine as the music director. The company was developed as an alternate choice to the Academy of Music, which consisted of the elite social class of New York. The early families that subscribed included the Astor, Morgan, Vanderbilt and Roosevelt families. The Metropolitan became a successful organization and it quickly outlived the Academy of Music. On the 22nd of October, 1883, the first season of The Met was presented, with Henry Abbey serving as manager. The first show was a performance of the song Faust of Charles Gounod. It was performed by Christina Nilsson, an outstanding Swedish singer. Including this performance, all opera shows were performed in Italian, even the ones which were written in German and French.

In the year 1898, the musicians and performers of the Metropolitan Opera went on a tour of different cities within the United States. The tour lasted six weeks and used to be a yearly event until 1986, when it was stopped after eighty-eight years, because of financial problems facing the company. In the beginning of the 1990s, the company's roster of singers went through a change. There occurred a rise in German, Italian and then French extensions in the line-up of the performers. This distinctive partition of the performers gradually disappeared following the Second World War, due to singers spending a small amount of time being a part of any one organization.

The first recording of a live show in the opera theater was recorded by Lionel Mapleson, who was a librarian and a violin player working for The Met. From the years 1900 until 1904, he captured snippets of the performers through an Edison phonograph which he had fixed close to the stage. It captured pictures of the solo performers, the orchestra and the chorus. This instrument was called the Mapleson Cylinder and it captured audio images of the Met of that time. These pictures were extremely unique and are the only recordings present today of some world-famous artists of that time such as Milka Ternina and Jean de Reszke. In the year 2002, the National Recording Registry included these audio images in their collection.

In1995, the Met established a new system which showed translations of the texts of opera. This was done under the supervision of Joseph Volpe, who was the general manager of the project. This system was installed for the benefit of the audience members, so that they could better understand the text. The system was known as Met Titles and it provided screens facing each seat, showing an English translation of the opera's text. This system cost the Met 2.7 million dollars to install, and the Met was the first opera house in the world to install such an elaborate system.

The venue shows broad variety of around twenty-seven operas every year in one season that begins in September and ends in May. The artists perform from Monday until Saturday and the line-up includes an orchestra, ballet, a chorus, children's choir and several solo artists. Numerous artists, including Luciano Pavarotti, have gained popularity solely because of their performances at this platform. Some singers are even permanent members of the line-up at the Met.
