The Mark Morris Dance Group was created by none other than Mark Morris himself. The formation of the group was a dream come true for this remarkable choreographer and director. Born on 29th August, 1956 in Seattle, Mark was started his love affair with dancing at a very young age. That affection made him re-locate to Spain to become a Flamenco dancer when he was only sixteen years old. After spending some time there and learning various new aspects of dancing Mark made his way back to the U.S. in 1976 and decided to stay in New York to start a career in dancing. Four years later he started a project with some friends and named it the Mark Morris Dance Group. They began by producing two shows in a year with Mark taking over the choreography duties.
It was in the year 1988 that the group got its first chance to show the world what they were capable of at a bigger stage. Gerard Mortier the head of the legendary Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels came to Mark with an offer of becoming the Director of Dance. Gerard had seen the group perform and was very impressed by everything they had to offer. Mark accepted the job and took the dance group with him. For the next three years the Mark Morris Dance Group came the face of the theater. They stint in Brussels began with L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato. That production was followed by another couple of extraordinary shows the first of which was The Hidden Soul of Harmony. The other was The Hard Nut, an adaptation by Mark of the iconic ballet The Nutcracker. They came back home to the U.S in 1991 after a very successful spell in Brussels.
The new start in their home country began with a six week long stint in Boston the next year. Then they went on to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival for the first time. That performance introduced them to an even larger fanbase. Mark’s The Hard Nut also made its debut in America and received widespread acclaim. A major road trip to countries like Australia, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom followed to turn the group into a global phenomenon.
The group began to grow so Mark and the management decided to build a permanent home where they could perform and look after all the other duties they were undertaking. For that they kicked off a special campaign in 1997. The idea was to raise funds that would go on to contribute towards the construction of a brand new dance center. A site was procured in 1998 and construction started the next year. Two years later the Mark Morris Dance Center opened its doors for the fans for the very first time. It was a monumental achievement that took the group to a whole new level.
The years that followed were as successful, if not more so, than the years they had spent post Mark Morris Dance Center. They began proceedings with a bang. To commemorate their twentieth anniversary they put on stage the highly acclaimed and one of their most magical productions BAM for the fans to enjoy. That level of excellence continued and they celebrated their twenty fifth anniversary with a worldwide debut of Cargo, a scintillating symphony orchestra.
One amazing performance after another has followed to this very day to propel the Mark Morris Dance Group to heights that are reserved for a very special set of performers. They have reached the top through sheer hard work and skill. They have raised the bar in terms of showing the world how to dance and the very difference facets of this wonderful art form. So book your Mark Morris Dance Group tickets and experience the magic live.
