History of the Manon Lescaut Opera
Back in the 1890’s when Puccini wanted to go ahead with this project for the first time, he was warned by his publisher to not do so. This was because there was already a successful opera titled Manon, in 1884, based on the same story composed by Jules Massenet. Despite all warnings, Puccini decided to proceed with the project. He really believed in the strong character of Manon and had faith that two operas on the same story could be a success. The first performance of Manon Lescaut took place in 1893. It was Puccini’s third opera but was by far his greatest success. Following its positive reception, the opera soon opened on the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1907.This production had Lina Cavalieri in the lead role, Antonio Scott as Lescaut, Enrico Caruso as des Grieux and Arturo Vigna as the conductor.
Synopsis of Manon Lescaut
Set in the second half of the eighteenth century in places such as Paris, Amiens, Le Havre and New Orleans, the story of Manon Lescaut starts off at a large public square near the Paris Gate. Edmondo is seen singing beautifully about the pleasures of youth as a chorus of students, girls and the general townspeople joins him in harmony. Soon, Des Grieux enters the picture and is greeted by the singing bunch. But this guy is gloomy and doesn’t want to sing of love.
Then a carriage is seen pulling over and the most beautifully mesmerizing Lescaut steps out of it. Everyone is smitten as the lead character is seen for the first time. Des Grieux is fixated on her and soon approaches her to tell her about his growing feelings of love. Reluctantly, she agrees to meet him later. Even though Manon was meant to be sent to a convent upon the will of her father, things change drastically as she decides to leave with des Grieux, while Geronte plans to abduct her and take her to Paris.
The second act opens in a room in Geronte’s house in Paris and shows how Manon is now the mistress of Geronte. But she is unhappy as she thinks that Geronte is too old and wicked. Soon she finds herself missing des Grieux, whom she left when his money ran out. Soon Des Grieux is back in the picture and in Geronte’s house. But things do not go as planned. As Manon tries to escape Geronte’s house with all the jewels and gifts he had bought for her over time, she is caught and dragged away. The next day, she is sent to be imprisoned via a harbor in Le Harve. At this point in the story, Des Grieux is grieved heavily and believes that he might have lost Manon forever.
The story continues on to take several twists and turns and ends up in New Orleans taking the audience along with them throughout.
