The musical, The Little Mermaid, is an amazing stage-rendition of a well-loved tale by the famed author Hans Christian Anderson. This Disney Theatrical production premiered in January 2008 and was received with popular acclaim. The Little Mermaid musical is based on the Blockbuster Disney animated film The Little Mermaid which was released in 1989. The book for the musical was penned by Doug Wright, the music is by Alan Menken and lyrics (same as the film) with added lyrics by Glenn Slater.

Nominated for the Grammy as well as the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Drama League Award in various categories, the musical managed to win an Audience Choice Award. The show has had amazing popular appeal, especially among theater-goers with families.

The Little Mermaid tells the story of Ariel, King Triton’s daughter, who lives under the sea with her father and sisters, and longs to see the human world. Her curiosity to experience life on land pushes her break a few strict rules. She falls into the trap of the evil witch Ursula. But Ariel’s romance with the human Prince Eric leads her to risk and sacrifice her most precious possession: her voice. The story’s primary appeal lies in the casting of a familiar truth of our wish to have it both ways, into the mold of a mermaid who is literally half-human, half sea-creature and who nurses contrary desires. It is a story of wanderlust and an inner struggle to seek the other half and become whole.

The songs are catchy and the lyrics are lovely; they reflect a whole spectrum of complex dramatic moments: contrary longings, logistical conflicts, evil, friendship, a sense of belonging, love. The most popular songs of The Little Mermaid are: "Part of your World," "Under the Sea," "Poor Unfortunate Souls," "Les Poissons," and "Kiss the Girl!"
The Little Mermaid 1989 film marked the beginning of an era later known as Disney Renaissance. When it was initially released, the animated film grossed more than $84 million in the US and an additional $99 million internationally. The film won an Academy Award, and numerous Golden Globes and Grammys.
