A Visual Extravaganza with Strong Content and Characters

The Broadway musical that won half a dozen Tony Awards tells the legendary tale of a royal lion cub, Simba. His journey of self-discovery while claiming his rightful throne comes with an exciting series of challenges and adventures. The heartwarming story sprinkled with powerful life lessons has resonated deeply with audiences, winning hearts of generations. Lion King is creative with touches of humor, emotional drama, some heartbreaking moments and several hilarious ones, providing just the right balance.

Characters

Along with a thoroughly engaging tale, the characters have been developed skillfully.

Simba:

Simba is the protagonist. Audiences are able to relate with the beloved character of Simba, as they watch him grow with the twists of fate from a carefree, energetic cub who loves getting into trouble to a mature and intelligent lion, who is willing to accept responsibilities and embrace his leadership role as the mighty king of Pride land.

Musafa:

The catalyst, Mufasa is one of the most significant characters. The majestic King is respected and admired by the animal kingdom. He is commanding, noble and wise, yet there is a soft and friendly side to him as well.

Queen Sarabi:

Mother of Simba is shown as a warm, supportive and protective mother as well as a responsible queen who remains strong through her grief.

Scar:

Scar is the ultimate villain, who comes across as devious and ambitious. He is obsessed with gaining power and can go to any length to get what he wants. The bad guy of the musical makes for a very convincing character.

Nala:

Nala is a fierce and intelligent lioness who convinces Simba to come back and claim his throne. She is Simba’s childhood friend and later becomes his love interest, who always stands beside him. With her logical reasoning and emotional connection, she is able to show him the right path.

Rafiki:

Rafiki is the wise old monkey and more of a mentor, always there to give guidance but also has a silly and funny side.

Timon and Pumbaa:

The flamboyant Timon and the naïve, loving Pumbaa offer comedic relief in the musical.

The Success Story of an Unexpected Smash Hit

Hot on the heels of the success of the 1994 Lion King movie, when the idea of a musical was floated, producer Thomas Schumacher thought it would never work. Few years down the line and he was declaring, “It’s difficult not to become emotional at this realization of the show’s impact.”

It was not a musical everyone was banking on. Even Julie Taymor, who received a Tony Award for its direction, had no idea that it would be a huge box office hit. At the time she was not known and many doubted her, but she was given full creative freedom and the results were staggering.

Overwhelmingly Positive Response

The musical became a roaring success. Taymor’s musical version became one of Disney's most loved classics ever. It broke records to become Broadway's third longest-running show. It has become a staple of Broadway and to this date enjoying sold out shows.

The tale of hope and adventure is a hit with kids and adults alike. Julie Taymor’s adaptation influenced theatrical storytelling in a big way. Her elaborated costume ideas with dramatic masks were distinct and revolutionary.

The musical had all the right ingredients. It featured dramatic puppetry, elaborate costumes, exotic stage artistry and technical genius which made Lion King a visually stunning theatrical production. The defining soundtrack complemented the already strong storyline and elevated it to a whole new level.

Powerful Soundtrack

Iconic songs like “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” were instant hits. The defining music was one of its major highlights and it was no surprise because it was given by the legendary Elton John, with lyrics by Tim Rice. After decades the show lives on. People are bringing next generations to watch it, which completes the circle of life.
