This is the cast that performed at the premier at the Hudson Theatre and then again at the Award winning Laguna Playhouse productions.
From its inaugural year onwards this musical has been taken by many production houses who have turned it into a spectacular theatrical experience. It has bagged the LA Drama Critics Circle Award in three categories; Production of the Year, Musical Direction and Ensemble. The show won the LA Weekly Award for the Best Musical of the Year. The Backstage Garland Awards were also awarded to it for it Musical Direction, Best Production of the Year and Ensemble.
The story of this musical revolves around the “Crooning Crabcakes” a Springfield based boy band. It is set in a time when talent hunts and reality shows like the American Idol or Star Search didn’t exist. The Crooning Crabcakes is formed when best friends Denny Varney, Wally and Eugene Johnson come together for their love music and singing. Louis the daughter of their potential sponsor comes in, and brings Skip along as the lead singer to complete the lineup. Things complicate when the band is banned to perform on the high school prom. As a result of the boys decide to prove themselves and want to take over the biggest stage of all. The band takes on a challenge and decide to enter the Bog Whopper Radio competition. This local event challenges all contestants to play their best covers of doo-wop songs of the sixties. The competition becomes a big time hit as the band plays some stupendous music and memorable songs. It leads the Crooning Crabs to the stairway of stardom. Playing songs from the past this musical becomes a musical journey that everyone would like to embark on. Life Could Be a Dream has been made with the efforts of some of the best singers, actors and creative crew onstage today. Roger Bean’s book fits perfectly in this jukebox show. It is strong and supportive of the story and is good to hear and see. Roger Bean worked with Jon Newton to deliver beautifully mastered arrangements. Steven Jones as the musical director made this show energetic with the keyboard keys he played from behind the sets. Mitchell Greco is the best of all the creative team members who has made this musical dynamic and distinguished. His work is flawless, fresh and very appealing and hooks you onto the songs in no time. Efforts of Kevin Holden (scenic design) and Tiffani Fuller (costume design) have really helped in reviving the era of the sixties.
