Les Miserables Segerstrom Center for the Arts Segerstrom Hall show is a musical created by Claude-Michel Schonberg and is based upon a Victor Hugo novel of the same name. With Schonberg’s musical compositions and lyrics by Jean-Marc Natel and Alain Boubil, alongside an English libretto written by Herbert Kretzer, the story portrays the period of the early nineteenth century in France and follows the tales of several characters in their struggle for revolution and redemption. The lead characters are joined by an ensemble of factory workers, prostitutes, and student revolutionaries. The show was presented for the very first time in London at the Barbican Centre in October 1985, from where it set out to become the second longest-performed show of the world, taking its place right after The Fantastics. In addition it is ranked as the second longest-playing show of the West End just below The Mousetrap, and is the third longest-presented show in the history of Broadway.
