La Cenerentola is an imaginative, fast paced and irresistibly funny production. The remarkable staging combined with brilliant choreography entrance the audience. Every minute detail of characters relate to the music and libretto. The vocal and dramatic detail is just perfect and funny portrayals are hysterical. La Cenerentola is a masterpiece worth to stand out of all other operatic dramas.
La Cenerentola consists of two acts. The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti. Completed in a period of three weeks, La Cenerentola is considered as one of the finest writing for solo voice and ensembles. The opera was first performed in Rome’s Teatro Valle in 1817. Contrary to the famous version of Cinderella, Rosini’s story has a much more self assured character of Prince and a stepfather instead of step mother. There is no fairy God mother but a disguised beggar who helps her to go the castle. The mice add some hilarious scenes in the opera and earn laughter and applaud, dancing and running around.
In her stepfather’s castle, the gentle and kind hearted yet lonely girl Angelina dreams of escaping cruelty of her wicked stepsisters and finding her true love. When the prince announces that he will choose his bride at a dazzling ball, she takes the chance to change her destiny. But she must overcome the obstacles put along her way by her stepfather and evil stepsisters to win her handsome prince. Prince Ramiro disguises as his valet to observe the ladies without letting them know. He admires gentle manners and kind heart of Angelina. With the help of Prince’s tutor who is disguised as a beggar, she is able to go to the ball. Prince Ramiro falls in love with lavishly dressed and kind hearted lady. When she leaves, she gives him one pair of matching bracelets. Prince Ramiro gathers his men and starts searching for her. At the home of her stepfather, Magnifico, the couple is reunited. In the throne room of Romiro’s palace, she asks the Prince to forgive her stepfather and step sisters and they embrace her.
This production is enchanting from beginning to end. It will entrance everyone, children as well as grownups. The performance of the cast is astonishingly good and voices of the songs are compelling, remarkably agile and accurate. The precision and accuracy of singing is combined with skilful acting of the performers. The cast with well matched voices to the character makes the opera wonderful. The eye-popping and breath taking brilliantly colored costumes add twist to the story. The rats with their long, floppy tails and whiskers make it all the most funny and memorable.
