La Boheme has music by the legendary music composer from Italy, Giacomo Puccini and its libretto is by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. This opera is based on Henri Murger’s novel "Scenes de la Vie de Boheme’. It is considered to be one of the most mature works of Giacomo Puccini and was his fourth opera. It was staged for the first time ever at Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy, on the 1st of February in 1896 and was carried out by Arturo Toscanini. It quickly became a rage all over Italy and since that time, La Boheme has been a part of Italy’s customary repertory of operas. It has been able to garner the same amount of interest internationally as well and is one of the most frequently performed operas. As per the Operabase, this opera takes the fourth spot on the list of operas performed more often than any other. It was also performed on the radio in 1946 by Toscanini with the help of NBC Symphony Orchestra and was ultimately released on Compact Disc and records.
La Boheme’s story is not fully based upon the novel ‘Scenes de la Vie de Boheme’. The opera takes inspiration from the several chapters of the novel and places them together. In fact the libretto of the opera takes two characters from the novel, Mimi and Rodolfo and centers on their relationship, ending with Mimi’s death.
The story is set in the city of Paris around the time period of 1830. The main protagonists are a seamstress named Mimi and a poet named Rodolfo. It is about their love and how they fall for each other almost right away. But Rodolfo is compelled to leave Mimi due to her flirtatious conduct. On the other hand Mimi happens to have a mortal disease and her days seem to be numbered. This makes Rodolfo extremely guilty because he feels that their relationship and their life together had worsened Mimi’s health even more. They are untied at the end of the opera for a brief time before the death of Mimi.
The first ever performance of La Boheme outside of Italy was in Argentina in 1896, at the Teatro Colon, in the city of Buenos Aires. Next it came to Moscow, Lisbon and Alexandria in the earlier part of 1897. The opera made its debut in the United Kingdom on the 22nd of April, in 1897, at the Royal Theater in the city of Manchester. There it was presented by a very well-known and prestigious company called the Carl Rose Company and was managed by Giacomo Puccini himself. The opera was performed in English and starred some of the most famous actors of that time. Then it was performed in the city of London, at the Royal Opera House, on October 2nd, 1897. In the same month, La Boheme was also performed in Los Angeles for its American premiere. After that it reached New York City on the 16th of May, in 1898 and was presented at the Palmo’s Opera House. Finally on July 1st, in 1899, Royal Opera House premiered its own production of the celebrated opera. The opera also had its German and French premieres at the Kroll Opera House and Théâtre des Nations, respectively. The opera’s popularity did not diminish with time but in fact it kept on becoming famous internationally all through the 20th century and was premiered at many prominent cities throughout the world.
The most special thing about La Boheme is the opera’s dynamic staging, beautiful and rich melodies along and the striking orchestral color. Its story has an appeal that is very unique and ingenious. A classic piece of opera, it is going to take you into a different time period, the 1980s and to the most romantic city on earth, Paris. La Boheme tickets are available now.
