The word Kodo itself means Heartbeat in the Japanese language, which is considered to be the origin of all sorts of rhythms. Another interpretation of the word Kodo can be Children of Drum. The Kodo performed outside the Japanese territory for the first time in 1981 when they debuted at the Berlin Festival. Since that day, the troupe has given well over 3,000 performances in various countries across the globe.
The year 1981 saw the formation of Kodo by some of the former members of another taiko group called Ondekoza. After its formation, Kodo made its world debut in the same year at the Berlin Festival. After their debut and appreciation that they received, the troupe spent the next seven years on road and toured all across South America, North America, Japan and Europe. Following the success of the tour, the Kodo Drummers of Japan then laid foundation to an international arts festival on Sado Island called the Earth Celebration. Prior to that, they also laid foundation to Kodo Village on the Sado Island, Japan. The group also keeps on having drum workshops from time to time, the first of which was held in 1989 called Kodo Juku. Over the years, Kodo has also claimed numerous awards and accolades not just in Japan but from the rest of the world as well.
In 1994, the group became the recipient of the MIDEM Music Video Award at International Visual Music Festival that was held in Cannes. They also received the Japanese Foreign Ministry Award for their international tours and Earth Celebration. In 1997, the Kodo also laid foundation to the Kodo Cultural Foundation, and almost three years after that they formed Kodo Arts Sphere America Organization which begin presenting workshop tours later in 2003. Kodo’s Earth Celebration has been huge success ever since its inauguration in 1988.
