Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Garretts very first inspiration to play saxophone came from his father who played saxophone and took it as a hobby. Later after Garrett graduated from Mackenzie High School he became a member of Duke Ellington Orchestra back in 1978 and that was when his career as a saxophonist really started off. In later years, Garrett also played alongside the Dannie Richmond Quartet and the Mel Lewis Orchestra.
As a bandleader, Garretts first ever studio recording surfaced in the market by the title of Introducing Kenny Garrett in 1984. After releasing his first album on CrissCross label, and then shifted to Atlanta Records and recorded & released two more studio albums titled African Exchange Student and Prisoner of Love. As of the moment, Garrett currently records with Warner Bros. Records ever since he released his first album on the label in 1992. Among some of his most famous records on Warner Bros. Label is his album titled Songbook that was recorded in 1997 and featured all of his original compositions. Furthermore the album was also nominated for Grammy Award.
Over the course of his career, Garrett has also had a chance of performing live with a number of other great jazz musicians like Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Brian Blade, Marcus Miller, Art Blakey, John McLaughlin, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones, Mulgrew Miller and Ron Carter. As a member of a super band called Five Peace Band, Garrett also went on world tour from 2008 to 2009 along with four other of his band members including Christian McBride, Chick Corea, Brian Blade and John McLaughlin. The group also recorded a Live CD on one of their performances, which went on to claim a Grammy Award. Kenny Garrett also holds a honorary Doctorate in Music which he was presented with back on May 7, 2011 from the Berklee Colleeg of Music located in Boston.
As the bandleader, Garrett has released numerous recordings with the latest one being the Seeds from the Underground that was released on the Mack Avenue Records in 2012. The album entirely comprises of the compositions that are originally composed by Garrett himself. All of the tracks on the album also pay tribute to all those big names that have inspired Garrett throughout his life. On one hand where Garrett tries to pay homage to all those whove always inspired him, on the other hand he along with his band also keep the audience entertained with their melodious and skillful command over their respective instrument. As a saxophonist, melody has always been an important and key element of all of his compositions and recordings. For the Seeds from the Underground the Kenny Garrett Quartet was also nominated for two Grammy Awards for the Categories of Best Improvised Jazz Solo and Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
