The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most famous and prominent orchestras present in Israel. The company was established in the year 1936, by Bronislaw Huberman, a famous Jewish violinist who has became widely recognized due to his individualized expressiveness, his flexibility and tone. Leonard Bernstein was the conductor of the orchestra from 1947 till 1990. His reign ended upon his demise. His services to the orchestra have been appreciated so much that the artist was named Laureate Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. From the time of its foundation, the Philharmonic Orchestra did not have any musical directors, only music conductors and music advisors. It wasn't until 1977 when Zubin Mehta was named the first music director of the orchestra. Then in the year 1981, Zubin's title was promoted and he was named the music director for life. The orchestra's Honorary Conductor is Kurt Masur since 1992 while Gianandrea Noseda was named the Principal Conductor.

Upon its creation in the 1930s, the first decade for the group was all about crystallization of music through orchestral unity. The ensemble consisted of musicians from all over the world such as Russia, Hungary, Germany and Poland. With the help of excellent conductors such as Steinberg, Molinari, Sargent and Dobrowen, the orchestra tried to expand and establish its mark in the Middle East. The prolific team presented an intense performance during the Second World War, where it played for the Allied Forces in the Western Desert. The concert was intended to promote the gallantry of the soldiers of the war, in order to uplift their spirits.

The Philharmonic Orchestra has been known to create numerous recordings for the Record Company named Decca. It has also gained popularity for recording the works of Igor Stravinsky; a famous Russian composer. Another famous creation by this group was the composition of Macross Plus's soundtrack, an anime. The soundtrack for this movie was created though collaboration with Yoko Kanno. Lately the orchestra has been known to perform music created by composers such as Mendelssohn, Mozart, Beethoven ad Dvorak. The current Secretary of the company is Avi Shoshani.

In the year 1948, when Israel was born, the Philharmonic Orchestra became an integral part of the Jewish nation. It performed in the Tel-Aviv Museum on the day of independence. During this decade, the orchestra hosted conductors such as Markevitch, Koussevitzky, Fricsay, Klecki, Giulini and Paul Paray.
