The talented duo Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who enjoyed the success of their Pulitzer Prize winning show “Next to Normal” have returned to the live stage with a brand new play. “If Then” is the story of a middle-aged woman Elizabeth who gets to discover the realities of life by simultaneously leading two different lives. Superb direction by Michael Greif brings out the intensity of the main character as well as the supporting cast. The creative team further includes Mark Wendland as the set designer, costume designer Emily Rebholz and Larry Keigwin as the choreographer. Opening to great reviews, If Then has seen huge turnout since its premiere in March 2014 and sales of If Then tickets are increasing for every new performance.
Reviewed as a “deeply touching and big hearted musical”, If Then raises it curtains on a scene set at the Madison Square Park. After moving back to the city following a divorce, Elizabeth is meeting her two school friends - Lucas, who is bisexual, and Kate who is gay. Both have their own opinion as to how Elizabeth should live her life from now on. Lucas encourages Elizabeth to start calling herself Beth and join him in his activism, whereas Kate asks her to go by the name Liz as it seems more appropriate for a city like New York. From there the story splits and Elizabeth leads a parallel life over the ensuing years.
As Liz, If Then’s protagonist is focused more on relationships and as Beth she is shown to be career oriented. In both lives though she has to face intense and difficult situations, and has tough decisions to make. Through some wonderful execution by Michael Greif, the story moves sideways as well as forward, showing how Liz’s and Beth’s life proceeds. A phone call that Beth takes and is ignored by Liz earns the former a job with city planning, and in another scene Liz agrees to go on a date with a guy who Beth is shown to have rejected, leading to romance and marriage. The dilemma of family versus career is presented in a very direct and effective way. It keeps the audience guessing right till the end and the entertainment level if kept alive through compelling scenes’ transition.
Besides having a great story and a talented creative team, another highlight of If Then is Idina Menzel. Through a power packed performance, she has once again proved why she was honored with multiple Tony Awards in Best Actress category. She has handled the switching personalities with ease, clearly showing the difference between Liz and Beth. Called a “blazing supernova” by the Hollywood Reporter, Menzel has given an emotional and energetic performance in tracks like “Here I Go”, “You Learn to Live Without”, “Some Other Me” and “Always Starting Over”.
If Then earned numerous nominations at the 2014 Tony Awards and is looking forward to a long successful journey ahead. The “intellectually and musically rich” show is not to be missed this season. Grab If Then tickets to enjoy a fun and entertaining musical.
