About Farinelli and the King
Farinelli and the King is a story about a monarch falling into madness, with the only cure being music. The storyline revolves around the true tale of Philip V (Philippe V in the play) from Spain. This 18th century royal suffered from depression and bouts of insanity that were apparently controlled by performances by the famous castrato Farinelli. Farinelli gave up the opera houses of Europe to become a musician in the king’s court, on request of the queen, Isabella Farnese. Initially, the King is wary of the imported star from Europe but soon discovers in him a kindred spirit – both are the kings in their respective circles, but are very conscious of their personal deprivations. Soon after meeting Farinelli, the king departs Madrid and opts for a life of simplicity, using music as his therapy and Farinelli as his friend.
This comic play had its debut in 2015 at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, with a completely sold out run. The play then moved to the West End and received immense critical acclaim, along with multiple award nominations.

The lead character of the King is played by Mark Rylance. The three-time Tony Award winner will be seen on Broadway for the first time since winning an Oscar for “Bridge of Spies” last year.
