An old phrase, 'Long gone, but never forgotten' holds perfectly true for the well known baseball legend Ernie Harwell. The award winning author Mitch Albom inspired by the life of this sports legend pays tribute to him by coming up with a new play titled after his name, Ernie. Albom's inspiration for coming up with a tribute play, Ernie, came in the following words, "Ernie Harwell was a treasure as a man, a friend and a broadcaster. I feel honored to come up with something using my talent that might stand as a legacy to the well known Voice of Summer. I intend to acquaint the audiences with a splendid man and a great game on stage."
The play opens by taking the audiences to the night of historical importance at Comerica when the Broadcaster was all set to deliver his farewell speech. Just before Ernie walks onto the grassy land of the baseball field, he encounters a young boy who is eager to know about his personal and professional life. This is the point in the play from where the story and the legend's life unfold.
Ernie starts narrating his story stating that 'I have had a lot of great ones and in literal sense it has been a terrific life.' This is shortly followed by the real footages of best baseball memories featuring the legend. Fans of Detroit Tigers will actually get a chance to witness the historical moments of meeting Ty Cobb and Great Bambino. Apart from this, they will also get to know how he recreated games in his early years and what it cost him to reach the top in his sports career.
Ernie Harwell had one of the longest runs as a broadcaster, for 42 seasons. He had a distinctive style of commentary that became his identity in a short span of time. The southern rich voice in authoritative style made his comments strong and enjoyable. Harwell never littered his broadcasts with excessive talking or shouting.
