Peter Quilter’s musical drama End of the Rainbow is an exhilarating production taking its audiences on a journey thrill and exhaustion at the same time. At one moment the musical would make the crowds want to dance away and the very next moment give them the feeling of hiding away. It is truly a sensational musical with the famous Tracie Bennett as Judy Garland. Her acting will surely take your breath away.
Set in the winters of 1968 London the musical unfolds with Judy Garland planning her glorious comeback as a singer. She is preparing for a series of concerts that will be held in the famous Talk of the Town nightclub. Her fiancé, Garland is a well known pianist and completely supports Judy’s comeback decision. Judy is undertaking a journey to discover who she truly is. Will she be able to sustain her success and fame or give it away in the hands of drugs and liquor? Even after more than four decades of Garland’s death her persona even today is one of the most celebrated and imitated. Even though she lives no more her charisma and persona continues to be the highlight of plays and people continue to find inspiration in her.
End of the Rainbow was premièred in August 2005 at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Judy Garland was played by Caroline O’Connor. Later in 2006 the musical also featured at the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In February 2010 Terry Johnson directed the musical starring Tracie Bennett at Northampton's Royal & Derngate. The play was a part of the Addicted To You season. Hilton McRae played the role of Anthony and Stephen Hagan starred as Mickey Deans. From November 2010 to May 2011 the musical was played at the Trafalgar Studios. Yet again Tracie Bennett led the musical. Her outstanding acting led to the play receiving four Olivier Awards nominations. Bennett was nominated as the Best Actress and McRae was nominated as the Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2011 the show even toured the UK gaining more success and popularity.
In America the show premiered in 2012 at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. The cast received Tony Award nominations for their performances. Bennett was awarded with the Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her extraordinary acting.
The TIME magazine describes Tracie’s performance by saying “As much as you will hear about TRACIE BENNETT's EXTRAORDINARY performance, SHE SURPASSES IT.” Unlike other actresses Tracie does not try to impersonate Judy. Her acting transcends imitation and copying. It is original and sensational. Her singing tone and style also matches Garland’s vocals. Hence Tracie adds the oomph factor in the performance and is strongly supported by the other cast members. Mickey Deans is played by Tom Pelphrey who is Garland’s manager and her fifth to-be-husband. Michael Cumpsty plays the role of Anthony her pianist. All these men take the task of making sure Garland stays sober and does not take drugs or liquor. They ensure she makes it to all her performances at the club, the Talk of the Town.
Classic songs like “Man That Got Away”, “Come Rain or Come Shine,”, “Just in Time” and many more are sung beautifully by Bennett. She takes the performance to an altogether new level with her melodious tunes.
