Elf is a Broadway musical based on the 2003 film Elf starring Will Farrel and directed by David Berenbaum. The musical officially opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theater in November 2010 and ran till January 2011. It has been directed by Casey Nicolaw, music by Chad Beguelin and the lyrics by Matthew Sklar. Elf traces the story of Buddy who, as a baby, crawls into Santas sack at an orphanage. Santa takes him back to the North Pole and tells Papa Elf to raise the baby who is named Buddy. The secret, that he is actually a human, is kept from Buddy but his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities give it away. Eventually Santa is forced to tell him the truth. When Buddy finds out his real identity he sets out to find his father who put him up for adoption. His father who works in a childrens book company is not even aware of the fact that he has a son. Buddy decides to find his father and leaves for New York. In New York Buddys innocence is shown through many different episodes like crossing the street at the wrong time and chewing discarded gum. When he eventually meets his father in the Empire State Building he throws him out and Buddy takes his suggestion to get back to Gimbels literally where he is considered to be an employer. When Buddy finds out it is not even the real North Pole he gets into a brawl with the fake Santa. This time the father reluctantly bails him out and takes him home to meet his wife and kids after a DNA test confirming that he is indeed Walters son. Completely put off by his sons ridiculous behavior, Walter is anything but happy to keep him in the house. But his wife insists that they keep him there unless he recovers. While living with the family, Buddy befriends his step brother Michael after beating school bullies in a snowball fight. At this point Buddy also goes on a successful date with Jovie who finds him charming and different from the men she is used to seeing. Walter takes Buddy to work with him. Buddy drinks wine in the mailroom assuming it to be syrup and ends up offending a very importsnt client, a famous and temperamental writer Miles Finch. When Finch, who is vertically challenged, enters Walters office Buddy thinks he is an elf and expresses his excitement just a little more than Finch can tolerate. This inflates Walter who tells Buddy to go away and tells him to leave his office. Buddy is completely on his own now. That night Buddy roams New York like a lost puppy. He meets Santa and tries to fix his sleigh which can fly only if everyone believes in Santa. Buddy tries to six the sleighs engine and when Central Park Patrol also tries to find it with him the engine is lost as well. It is only when the whole New York City, including Walter, sings Santa Claus is coming to town, that the sleigh actually begins to fly. Jovie is the one who sums up the courage to sing and the whole city joins her in flying Santas sleigh. Pap Elf, in the epilogue, tells that Walter started his own successful publishing company and the first book he published was Buddys adventures. Buddy, he adds, marries Jovie and they have a beautiful daughter and the family often visits the North Pole.
