Some are affected by them more than others, yet the devastation these acts bring can result in the deaths of millions of people at a time and sometimes leave whole civilizations and countries hanging over a precipice. The lives that are lost cannot be brought back, yet their memory can live on. Their ideals and their beliefs can survive, and it is up to the world at large to make sure that they get the justice they deserve.
Shepherding the weak
Justice can have many forms. A story about the plight of women during the Second Liberian Civil War, it highlights the various atrocities that these women faced, as well as the mental and physical determination it required to get through these tough times. Through the valley of darkness
The play follows the story of five main female characters, named Helena, Maima, Bessie, ‘The Girl’ and Rita. Four of these women have been captured by a commanding officer in the ‘Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy’ (LURD) organization, which is intent on removing the President of Liberia, Charles Taylor, from office. Two of the women, Bessie and Helena, live in a squalid and rundown shack in the middle of the rebel camp when the C.O delivers ‘the Girl’ to them. They start caring for the new addition to their family and also try their best to protect her from the perverted and monstrous C.O. Around this time, Maima has become a soldier, fighting with the rebels, while Rita is a member of a peace keeping organization that drops in periodically to check up on the well being of the women.
The play was written by the supremely talented playwright and actor, Danai Gurira. Originally just an actor, she decided to try her hands at writing because she felt it would add to her acting ability and give her a better understanding of the characters she would be playing. After reading about the plight of the women in war torn Liberia, she decided to travel to the country in order to help the survivors and to hear their life stories. Gurira was then inspired to turn their experiences into a play, which was developed in 2009 and made its Off-Broadway debut in 2015.
