The early days
Deepak Chopra was born in 1947, which was a turbulent time in his native India. It was the year of the partition, when the country was divided into two. It was in this climate that lieutenant for the British Army and prominent Cardiologist, Krishan Lal Chopra and his wife Pushpa Chopra had their first child. As Deepak grew up, his father’s career as a doctor appealed to him and he decided to study at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after graduating from his high school.
As a doctor, he initially worked in the rural areas of India and helped people from all walks of life. He lived in deplorable conditions at times, however it was during this time that his interest in endocrinology developed. By the time he turned twenty three, he got married to a girl named Rita and together they immigrated to the United States in 1970. After completing various residencies, Deepak became a certified doctor for internal medicine, specializing in endocrinology.
Time for a revelation
Deepak’s rise in his profession continued over the next few years, as he became a lecturer at several Ivy League schools, was made Chief of Staff at the New England Memorial Hospital (NEMH) and set up his own private practice as well. However, at the same time he found himself drinking coffee like water and smoking a lot of cigarettes. That made him re-examine his life and look for some kind of change. That change came his way on a trip to India in the early eighties.
There he met Brihaspati Dev Triguna, who was the head of the Indian Council for Ayurvedic Medicine. He not only told Deepak about the amazing rehabilitating effects of Ayurveda (traditional Hindu medicine), but also asked him to use Transcendental Meditation (TM) to control his excessive coffee drinking and smoking.
After getting positive results from the start, Deepak wholeheartedly embraced the TM movement and would later go on to meet its leader, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who asked him to set up an Ayurvedic health center. Deepak set up the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine as well as the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Products International and became medical director of the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Health Center.
