This type of unusual entertainment has not been very popular in modern era and kind of under-documented but a current survey of this field is contained in Tom Standage film The Mechanical Turk released in 2002.
There is a slightly alternate version which is contained in the opera of Jacques Offenbach called The Tales of Hoffmann, this is also a fictional work about the same Hoffmann inspired from which evolved the Coppelia story. Tales of Hoffmann is also an equally amazing opera telling three fantastic tales with an epilogue and in which Hoffmann is a participant himself. In the first story Hoffmann fells madly in love with Olympia a mechanical doll but the situation goes towards a bitter end when the doll is broken.
