Immaculate, awesome and scintillating are just a few words to describe this comic ballet. This ballet has been ruling the hearts of fans not only in the US but also other countries. The main idea is inspired from two macabre stories by E.T.A Hoffman namely Die Puppe (the Doll) and Der Sandman (The Sandman). This is one of the most performed ballet at the Opera Garnier. Fans Coppelia is something unique and if you haven’t watched it then you certainly have missed it all so get your Coppelia Tickets only from us for an enjoyable evening!

Coppelia was premiered in 1870 at the Theater Imperial de I Opera, this is primarily a comic ballet and the choreography was done by Arthur Saint –Leon and music was composed by Leo Delibes. This is a three Act ballet and tells the story of a diabolical and mysterious doctor Coppelius who has a lifelike human size doll to which a village swain Frantz gets infatuated with. As the ballet is comic and is often referred to as the lighter side of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein’s darker side.

The story of Coppelia is set in a peasant village and if Giselle is a tragedy then Coppelia is a comedy set in the same background. The story also seems to be inspired from the travelling shows that use to take place in the 18th and 19th century staring automatons mechanical. This type of unusual entertainment has not been very popular in modern era and kind of under-documented but a current survey of this field is contained in Tom Standage film The Mechanical Turk released in 2002.

There is a slightly alternate version which is contained in the opera of Jacques Offenbach called The Tales of Hoffmann, this is also a fictional work about the same Hoffmann inspired from which evolved the Coppelia story. Tales of Hoffmann is also an equally amazing opera telling three fantastic tales with an epilogue and in which Hoffmann is a participant himself. In the first story Hoffmann fells madly in love with Olympia a mechanical doll but the situation goes towards a bitter end when the doll is broken.

In 1974, with the help of expert dancer Alexandra Danilova, renowned choreographer George Balanchine revived Coppelia and this time it was staged in New York for the New York City Ballet. Alexandra Danilova staged the Petipa Act 11 choreography and for Act 111 Balanchine created new choreography for the mazurka, Frantz’s variation in Act 1 and czardas. Helgi Tomasson danced the role of Frantz, Doctor Coppelius was portrayed by Shaun O’ Brian Patricia McBride danced to the role of Swanilda.

Coppelia is a wonderful ballet and as it has a comic tint it keeps the audience glued to their seats and once Coppelia ends they are in awe due to its immaculate choreography, perfect timing and melodious music.
